Locals Troubled by Eagle Attacks in Pathanamthitta; Step Out with Helmets and Umbrellas

Kozhencherry: Residents of Njuzhoor in Ayiroor panchayat, Pathanamthitta district, are facing a distressing situation due to a series of continuous eagle attacks. The primary victims of this unusual menace are the inhabitants residing near the Ayiroor Vaidyasalappadi Providence Home area.
An eagle, which has taken roost on a tree near the residence of M.P. Thomas in Chuzhukunnu, has been terrorizing the locality for the past four days. The bird repeatedly swoops down to peck at pedestrians and individuals venturing outside their homes, causing widespread alarm and concern among the community.
Recently, M.P. Thomas’s wife became one of the victims, sustaining a peck injury to her forehead from the attacking bird. She was subsequently admitted to the district hospital where she received medical treatment for her injury. Similar incidents have been reported by several other households in the vicinity, indicating a broader pattern of aggressive behavior from the raptor.
In response to the escalating threat, many residents have resorted to taking precautionary measures, such as wearing helmets and carrying umbrellas when they step out of their homes, to protect themselves from potential attacks. The unusual situation has prompted calls for immediate intervention from local authorities.
Following reports from the affected residents, officials from the Ranni Forest Department, accompanied by the Rapid Response Team, arrived at the scene to assess the situation and attempt to capture the troublesome bird. However, their efforts to apprehend the eagle proved unsuccessful. Panchayat member Samkutty Ayikkavil has urgently called for swift action to be taken to drive the eagle away from the area, emphasizing the need to restore safety and peace of mind for the local population.
