“Learn to wield a hoe along with Zumba”: Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan on School Zumba Controversy

Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan has stated that Zumba dance should not be imposed in schools, suggesting that “it would be good to teach students to wield a hoe (toomba) alongside Zumba.” Satheesan called for discussions with those who oppose the program. He lamented that Kerala has become a place where communalism can ignite even plain water, urging the government not to provide issues for such elements to exploit.
Satheesan emphasized that such activities should not be forced upon anyone. “Let those who like it do it; those who don’t, need not. Ours is a country with diverse languages and attire. That diversity is the beauty of our nation,” he said, advising against engaging in controversies over such matters.
Various organizations have expressed their opposition to Zumba dance in schools. However, the Education Department maintains its stance to proceed with the Zumba program. The Education Department issued directives for Zumba dance in schools with the aim of diverting students’ attention from drug abuse while also promoting physical fitness. Following this, some schools have already commenced Zumba sessions. Critics’ main allegation is that the program is incompatible with the local culture.
