Kollam Court Seeks Police Report on M. Swaraj’s Controversial Sabarimala Speech

Kollam: The Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Kollam has sought a detailed report from the police regarding a controversial speech made by CPM leader M. Swaraj concerning women’s entry into the Sabarimala temple. The court’s directive comes in response to a complaint alleging that Swaraj’s remarks were baseless and provocative.
The complaint was filed by Youth Congress State Vice President Vishnu Sunil. It included video evidence of M. Swaraj’s speech, delivered in 2018. The initial complaint was lodged with the Kollam West Police, but when they failed to register a case, the matter was escalated to the City Police Commissioner. Following a similar lack of action from the Commissioner’s office, Vishnu Sunil approached the court, which has now intervened by demanding a report from the police.
According to the complaint, M. Swaraj’s speech contained statements such as “Malikappurathamma’s tears flowed as floods through Kerala’s rivers” and “Ayyappan’s celibacy has ended.” The complainant argues that these remarks are deeply offensive and hurt religious sentiments, necessitating legal action.
