Kochi Metro’s Third Phase to Extend Service to Angamaly via Airport Connectivity

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has initiated preliminary steps to extend metro services from Aluva to Angamaly as part of its third phase, aiming to connect Kochi International Airport. To move forward, KMRL has invited tenders from consultancy firms for preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR).

The demand to extend the metro to the airport has existed since its inception, as it would not only improve connectivity for air travelers but also help ease traffic congestion in the Nedumbassery-Angamaly region. Additionally, the extension is expected to boost regional development.

The DPR is expected to be submitted within six months, focusing on the most financially viable and efficient plan. It will analyze whether an elevated, underground, or hybrid route would be the best option economically. KMRL has also emphasized minimizing land acquisition and displacement. The tender submission window is open from February 10 to 17, with the bids set to be opened on February 19.

Additionally, a feasibility study will explore the possibility of developing an independent metro corridor instead of linking it to the existing metro route. A special report will also be prepared on extending the Aluva-Angamaly metro line towards the upcoming GIFT City region in the future. The DPR will assess factors such as route length, station locations, expected passenger volume, land acquisition costs, and project timelines.

Currently, KMRL has completed Phase 1 from Aluva to Thrippunithura and is progressing with Phase 2, which extends from JLN Stadium to Infopark. The plan to extend the metro to Angamaly marks the next significant step in Kochi’s urban transit expansion.
