Kerala Weather Update: Low Pressure in Bay of Bengal; Light Rain to Continue, Sea Erosion Possible

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is likely to experience light rain accompanied by thunder and lightning today. The Meteorological Department has not issued specific rain warnings for any particular districts in its five-day forecast. However, light rainfall is expected across all 14 districts of Kerala today.
There is a possibility of isolated heavy rainfall in some areas. Heavy rainfall is defined as precipitation ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. The Central Meteorological Department has also indicated the likelihood of light rain in isolated parts of Pathanamthitta, Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kozhikode districts over the next three hours.
Meanwhile, a new low-pressure area is anticipated to form in the Bay of Bengal. A cyclonic circulation is currently situated over North Andaman and Myanmar, which is expected to move towards the North Bay of Bengal by September 22. A new low-pressure system is projected to reach the central-eastern and northeastern Bay of Bengal, near the Myanmar-Bangladesh coast, by September 25. The Central Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rain for Kerala over the next five days.
**Kallakkadal Warning Issued**
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued a “Kallakkadal” (swell surge) warning, indicating a possibility of sea erosion along the Kerala coast due to high waves measuring 0.9 to 1.0 meters. This warning is in effect from 08:30 PM on September 22, 2025, to 02:30 PM on September 24, 2025. A similar advisory applies to the coastal areas from Neerodi to Arokyapuram in Kanyakumari district, where high waves are expected from 05:30 PM on September 22, 2025, to 11:30 AM on September 24, 2025.
Fishermen and coastal residents are urged to exercise extreme caution during this period.
**Safety Guidelines:**
1. In areas severely affected by sea surges, residents should evacuate and relocate as per directives from local authorities.
2. Small boats and vessels should refrain from venturing into the sea.
3. During the “Kallakkadal” phenomenon and periods of high waves, launching fishing vessels into the sea is as hazardous as docking them. Therefore, both launching and docking should be avoided when wave intensity increases.
4. All recreational activities centered around beaches, including tourism, should be completely suspended until the INCOIS warning is withdrawn.
5. Fishing vessels (boats, canoes, etc.) should be securely moored in the harbor. Maintaining a safe distance between vessels can help prevent accidents caused by collisions. The safety of all fishing equipment must also be ensured.
6. Trips to beaches and any activities involving entering the sea for recreation should be strictly avoided.
7. Special vigilance is required due to the potential for coastal erosion.
