Kerala Weather Update: Heavy Rain with Thunderstorms for Next 5 Days; Orange, Yellow Alerts Issued

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that Kerala will experience heavy rain with thunderstorms for the next 5 days. Orange and Yellow alerts have been declared in various districts as part of the rain forecast for the upcoming five days. An Orange alert has been issued for Idukki district today, indicating the possibility of very heavy rainfall. According to the IMD, ‘Very Heavy Rainfall’ means precipitation ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours.
A Yellow alert has been declared today in 8 districts: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Palakkad. These districts are expected to experience isolated heavy rainfall. The IMD defines ‘Heavy Rainfall (ISOL H)’ as 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain within 24 hours. Thunderstorms are also anticipated.
Meanwhile, a strengthened low-pressure area is currently situated over North Tamil Nadu. It is expected to move westward and weaken into a low-pressure area within the next 24 hours. A trough of low pressure extends from North Tamil Nadu to Lakshadweep, passing over Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and North Kerala, at an altitude of 1.5 kilometers above sea level. Kerala is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall over the next 5 days. Specifically, the IMD has predicted isolated very heavy rainfall for Idukki district today (December 3), and isolated heavy rainfall for both today and tomorrow.
For the next 3 hours, the IMD has also forecast isolated moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and strong winds reaching up to 40 kmph in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam districts of Kerala. Other districts may experience isolated light rain.
