Kerala Weather Update: Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Expected; Yellow Alert for Two Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: The Meteorological Department has issued a warning that heavy rainfall is expected to persist across Kerala today. Yellow alerts have been declared for several districts as part of the five-day rain forecast. Specifically, Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts are under a yellow alert today, indicating the likelihood of isolated heavy downpours. Heavy rain is defined as precipitation ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. Furthermore, the Central Meteorological Department anticipates light rain in Thiruvananthapuram district over the next three hours.

Thunderstorm Advisory Issued

The Central Meteorological Department has also issued an advisory for thunderstorms accompanied by rain in isolated areas of Kerala, effective from today until November 14, 2025.

Precautionary Measures for Public Safety

The public is strongly advised to adhere to the following safety guidelines, as thunderstorms pose significant risks to human and animal life, as well as electrical and communication infrastructure, and household appliances connected to power sources. These precautions should be observed from the onset of dark clouds, as lightning may not always be visible:

* **Seek Immediate Shelter:** At the first sign of lightning, move indoors to a safe building without delay. Open spaces increase the vulnerability to lightning strikes.
* **Secure Indoors:** During periods of strong winds and thunderstorms, ensure all windows and doors are closed. Avoid standing near windows and doors. Remain inside the building and minimize contact with walls or floors.
* **Disconnect Electronics:** Unplug all household electrical appliances. Refrain from being in close proximity to electrical devices during a thunderstorm.
* **Communication Devices:** Avoid using landline telephones during lightning. Mobile phone usage, however, is generally considered safe.
* **Outdoor Activities:** If the sky is overcast, all outdoor activities, especially for children, on open grounds or terraces, should be avoided.
* **Avoid Trees:** Do not seek shelter under trees during a thunderstorm. Similarly, refrain from parking vehicles beneath trees.
* **Vehicle Safety:** If you are in a vehicle during a thunderstorm, remain inside with all windows closed. Avoid extending limbs outside the vehicle. You are generally safe inside a car. However, travel on bicycles, motorbikes, or tractors should be postponed, and individuals should seek refuge in a safe building until the thunderstorm passes.
* **Outdoor Chores:** Do not venture onto terraces or into yards to retrieve clothes or perform other chores when rain clouds are present and lightning is active.
