Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced a change in the rain alert for Kerala, forecasting heavy rainfall to continue across the state for the next five days. In response to this prediction, a yellow alert has been declared for today, October 17, 2025, in 10 districts.
The districts under yellow alert today are Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kozhikode. The IMD defines “heavy rainfall” as precipitation ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period.
Furthermore, the IMD has warned of isolated thunderstorms with rain and strong winds, reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph, in Kerala from today until October 21, 2025. Over the next three hours, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad, and Kozhikode districts are likely to experience isolated moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds up to 40 kmph. Meanwhile, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam districts may witness isolated light rainfall.
The weather phenomenon contributing to this forecast is a cyclonic circulation situated over the Southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep areas. This system is anticipated to intensify into a low-pressure area over the Southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep region, near the Kerala-Karnataka coasts, by tomorrow. It is further expected to strengthen into a deep depression over the subsequent 48 hours.
Parts of Kerala are likely to experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers over the next seven days, with isolated heavy rainfall also probable from October 17 to 23. The IMD also predicts thunderstorms and winds gusting to 30 to 40 kmph over the next five days.
