Kerala to Launch ‘Kuttanad Safari’ – A Backwater Tourism Initiative

State Water Transport Department's Budget Tourism Project to Offer Unique Cultural Immersion

Inspired by the desert safaris of Gulf countries, the Kerala State Water Transport Department (SWTD) is set to launch the ‘Kuttanad Safari,’ a unique tourism package offering an immersive experience of the region’s backwater beauty. As a precursor to implementing this budget tourism project, Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar visited Pathiramanal Island in Muhamma Grama Panchayat.

The Minister announced that the project aims to allow tourists to experience the complete charm of Kuttanad in a single boat journey. This package will also enable visitors to get a close look at Kuttanad’s traditional art forms, music, and culture.

The safari is designed to begin at 11:00 AM from Alappuzha and conclude at the same location by 5:00 PM. As part of the journey, tourists can enjoy light refreshments, traditional toddy from a local toddy shop, and a full lunch.

Adding to the unique experience, a painter will be on board to draw live portraits of the tourists. Visitors will also have the opportunity to witness traditional coir-making and palm leaf weaving firsthand, and even try their hand at these crafts. The Minister added that hats and balls made from palm leaves would be crafted and showcased live for the tourists.
