Kerala: Schools Shut in Four Districts as Red Alert for Heavy Rains Continues Tomorrow

Kozhikode: With a Red Alert declared for Kozhikode district due to continuing heavy rainfall, educational institutions in the district will remain closed tomorrow, May 27 (Tuesday). The holiday will also apply to Anganwadis, Madrasas, and tuition centers, as announced by the District Collector. Currently, schools in four districts across the state have declared a holiday due to the severe rain.
In addition to Kozhikode, educational institutions in Wayanad, Kannur, and Kottayam districts have also declared a holiday for Tuesday due to the intense rainfall. The respective District Collectors have also ordered that special classes should not be conducted in schools.
District Collectors have stated that as a precautionary measure due to the continuing very heavy rain, educational institutions, tuition centers, Anganwadis, and Madrasas will be closed tomorrow. However, Anganwadi staff are not exempted from duty.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that extremely heavy rainfall will persist in the state on Tuesday. Besides Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts today, isolated extremely heavy rainfall is also likely in Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur districts tomorrow (Tuesday). The IMD has issued a Red Alert for these districts as a precautionary measure.
The IMD defines “extremely heavy rainfall” as precipitation exceeding 204.4 mm in 24 hours. The state is expected to experience widespread rain until Friday. In the coming days, in addition to extremely heavy rainfall, the IMD also forecasts very heavy and heavy rainfall in various districts.
