Kerala Schools Announce 12-Day Christmas Break

The Director of Public Education has announced this year’s Christmas holidays for schools across Kerala, granting students a longer-than-usual break. Schools in the state will observe a 12-day holiday period from December 24 to January 4, inclusive of both dates. This extended vacation comes as good news for students, who typically receive a 10-day Christmas break.

The half-yearly examinations are scheduled to commence on December 15 and conclude on December 23, just before the festive season. Following the Christmas and New Year break, schools are slated to reopen on January 5. The decision to resume classes on January 5 takes into account the Mannam Jayanti public holiday on January 2, along with the subsequent Saturday and Sunday.

Beyond the Christmas and New Year period, the academic calendar in December has seen additional breaks due to various reasons. When factoring in regular Saturdays and Sundays, students generally attend school for roughly half the days in December. This year, the number of holidays has further increased due to local elections. Educational institutions across the state will remain closed on election day. Furthermore, schools designated for the distribution and storage of voting machines were granted extra holidays. All educational institutions serving as vote counting centers will also observe a holiday on Saturday, December 13.
