Kerala Government Extends Bar Timings for New Year’s Eve, Enhances Security in Fort Kochi

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has announced an extension of operating hours for bars and beer and wine parlors across the state in anticipation of New Year’s Eve celebrations. On Wednesday, December 31, establishments will be permitted to remain open until midnight, a special relaxation granted by the government through an official order. This move aims to accommodate the public during the festive period.
Simultaneously, extensive arrangements are being implemented in Kochi, particularly in the Fort Kochi area, to manage the influx of revelers. Parking will be strictly prohibited in Fort Kochi on Wednesday, and entry to the area will be restricted after 7 PM to ensure crowd control and safety. To facilitate celebrations, public transportation will operate until 3 AM, with Kochi Metro, Water Metro, KSRTC, and private buses extending their services, as confirmed by the City Police Commissioner.
Fort Kochi is fully prepared to usher in the New Year with traditional fervor. This year, two towering ‘Pappanji’ effigies will be set alight at the Parade Ground and Veli Maidan, a highlight of the celebrations. Rigorous security measures have been put in place throughout Fort Kochi and its surroundings to ensure a safe and festive environment for all attendees.
Adding to the festive ambiance, the ‘Mazhamaram’ (Rain Tree) at Veli Maidan in Fort Kochi was brightly lit on Christmas Day, adorned with yellow lights. This impressive display, considered Asia’s largest Christmas tree, features 1.5 lakh serial bulbs and cost 8 lakh rupees. Celebrations are scheduled to commence at 6:30 PM and continue until midnight, with comprehensive arrangements made for the New Year festivities. The construction of the Pappanji at Veli Maidan has already been completed.
Both the Parade Ground and Veli Maidan, traditional gathering spots for New Year’s Day, will host dance and music programs. Anticipating a large turnout, the police have organized elaborate security and traffic management systems to ensure smooth celebrations and the safety of the public in Fort Kochi during these festive days.
