Heavy Rains Expected Across Kerala for Next Five Days; Orange and Yellow Alerts Issued

Monsoon Activity to Intensify from Wednesday; Fishing Ban Along Coasts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rainfall across Kerala for the next five days, with intensity expected to increase significantly from Wednesday. Consequently, Yellow and Orange alerts have been issued for various districts.

Today (July 14), a Yellow Alert is in place for Kannur and Kasaragod districts. Tomorrow (July 15), the alert extends to Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. On July 17, Yellow Alert will be active in Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts. A Yellow Alert indicates the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall, with precipitation ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours.

An Orange Alert for very heavy rainfall has been declared for Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Wednesday (July 16). On Thursday (July 17), Idukki, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts will also be under an Orange Alert. An Orange Alert signifies very heavy rainfall, between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm in 24 hours.

The IMD also predicts strong winds, with speeds ranging from 40 to 50 kilometers per hour, until Thursday. In light of the prevailing weather conditions, a ban on fishing has been imposed along the Kerala-Lakshadweep coasts and the Karnataka coast until Thursday.

Residents in affected areas are advised to exercise caution and stay updated with official advisories.
