Complaint Filed Against Guruvayoor Muslim League Councilors for Oath in Name of Allah

THRISSUR: A formal complaint has been lodged with the State Election Commission, alleging that two Muslim League councilors of Guruvayoor Municipality violated the prescribed oath-taking procedures. The complaint specifically highlights that the councilors took their oath in the name of Allah, which is deemed contrary to the established rules.
The complaint was filed by R.H. Abdul Saleem, a leader of the Kerala Congress (M), who has called for the disqualification of the two councilors: Abdul Rasheed Kunnikal, representing Ward 15, and Noushad Ahammu, from Ward 23.
According to the existing legal framework, councilors are required to conclude their oath by swearing “in the name of God,” “in the name of the divine,” or by making a “solemn affirmation.” The complainant argues that the act of taking the oath solely in the name of Allah by both individuals constitutes a breach of these regulations.
Furthermore, the complainant has urged the Municipal Secretary to issue an directive preventing both councilors from participating in any council meetings until a definitive decision is reached on the matter by the Election Commission.
In the recent election, Abdul Rasheed Kunnikal secured his victory from the Substation ward with a majority of 678 votes, while Noushad Ahammu was elected from the Palayoor ward with a majority of 391 votes. Following the election, the LDF currently holds the municipal administration with 23 seats. The UDF has 16 seats, the NDA has two seats, and independent candidates hold five seats.
